10 Apple Device Setup Tips for Friends and Family

If you’re giving or getting Apple devices this year for the holidays, here are some basics to share and teach!

  1. If they’ve never used an Apple ID before, create an (at) iCloud email for them to use instead of their personal email address. And make sure they’re using the same account for Media & Purchases.

  2. Convince them to buy iCloud storage and setup iCloud Photo Library + Backup. Or just add them to your iCloud Family to share storage!

  3. Make sure parents aren’t using their personal iCloud account on their kid’s devices. Show them how to setup a child iCloud account with Screen Time and Ask to Buy restrictions.

  4. Show them how to make folders with apps, or better yet, teach the habit of searching with Spotlight! Whether it’s to open an app or find a contact, Spotlight is where it’s at.

  5. Teach them about Find My, enable it, how to access via the web, and how to share location with friends and family. Especially how to find child devices in the same family.

  6. Turn on iMessages in iCloud and enable SMS forwarding to other devices like iPad and Mac if they have them!

  7. Customizing your Lock Screen and Home Screen, especially with widgets, can be pretty complicated. Setup a few options for them and teach them how to switch. Definitely setup a rotating image Lock Screen with specific faces too.

  8. Setup Apple Pay and autofill for Safari. Maybe even go through buying something so they understand the process.

  9. Teach them about Control Center, customizing it, and how to AirPlay. Not just screen mirroring, but AirPlay from music and YouTube videos too.

  10. Siri has a ton of abilities now. Show them a few, even simple ones like setting a reminder, calling someone, or playing by music!
